Past Projects & Programs

Garden volunteer Lynne Logan has been organizing Tuesdays in the Garden lectures and workshops on various garden topics. Many of these hosted by Paine Branch Library. The next workshops are April 29, May 6, and May 13, 2025.

The beginnings of our permaculture orchard at the garden. Many thanks to our volunteers, Lynne, Pele, JP and Andrew for their hard work. Thanks to Clifton Recycle for mulch and Aspinall’s Tree Nursery for trees, donated September 2024.

April 20, 2023 - Earth Day - Opening Day at the Garden

Thanks to the 20 volunteers who came out to the Eastwood Community Garden on Earth Day, April 22, to help open the garden for its 7th growing season! Many of the original raised beds, which were starting to rot, were rebuilt on Earth Day and the Advocates gardeners started planting a “community bed” outside of the fence that will grow produce to be given away to neighbors. More recently, a new work table was built and installed by the Advocates gardeners and a farmstand kiosk was built by Tim Gottschall. Watch for more garden updates on Facebook.

Mazella Court and Tom White Memorial Bench Dedication - Sept 29, 2022

Eastwood neighbors, friends, and family gathered at Eastwood Heights Park yesterday to formally dedicate Mazella Court in honor of Coach Joe Mazella and a memorial bench in honor of Tom White.

Janice Mazella shared memories of her late husband, Joe, a dedicated Eastwood neighbor, coach, and mentor. She described how she and others have found the park and memorial to be a source of peace and how their grandkids play basketball on the court named after their grandfather. ENA board member, Amy Rood, explained how the community banded together and raised $30,000 to restore and enhance this basketball court in Coach Mazella's memory.

Charry Lawson shared memories of lifelong Eastwood resident Tom White, their service together on the Central New York Recreation and Parks Society, and reminded us why we should all strive to #BeLikeTom. Tom White’s family is pictured here sitting on his bench – a great place to watch the sun set over Eastwood – donated in memory of Tom by Parkitects.

Becky Jackson, ENA board member and Garden Coordinator, unveiled many improvements to the community garden including fencing and signage funded by a grant secured by Assemblyman William Magnarelli, recent improvements funded by TNT Syracuse, and a little free library donated by County Legislator Peggy Chase and painted by garden member and artist Rachel Bullock.

Thank you to all who joined us for the event! And thank you to Syracuse Parks & Rec for making all these good things possible.
